1993: Girlie Show Frankfurt Gig Cancelled!

She was set to do just one concert in Germany during her 1993 Girlie Show tour - the show at Frankfurt's Festhalle venue on Saturday October 2nd would have followed on from German gigs on the 1987 Who's That Girl and 1990 Blond Ambition tours.

Just a couple of days after the Girlie Show tour's worldwide opening in London and only a handful of days before the German show date, news hit that a German politician wanted Madonna's concert to be stopped. The conspiracy theorists unsurprisingly went into overdrive then when shortly afterwards it was announced that the gig was cancelled!

At incredibly short notice and to much disappointment, an official statement announced that the show would not be happening due to problems constructing the stage in time! No alternate date was scheduled and so the tour skipped Germany.

Here's how MTV-Europe and CNN reported things, in the first week of October 1993.

1993: Girlie Show TV / DVD Differences

Madonna's 1993 Girlie Show tour got its Home Video release in 1994 on VHS & Laserdisc and in later years a DVD also went to stores. The concert on Friday November 19th 1993 at Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia featured - and although this show had already been broadcast on TV in various countries in 1993, as you might have expected some changes were made for the official Home Video release. (Read more about the drama surrounding that 1993 TV broadcast at the superb blog The Beats Within!)

As well as remastering the concert audio, Warner Music Vision re-assembled the concert video using the original multi-camera footage to produce a more polished edit for their release. Many different camera angle shots were included which had not been seen in the TV broadcast.

One other notable difference was a change to the circus music used at the start and end of the concert known as the "Girlie Show Theme". On the tour, a piece of music was used which for one reason or another (most likely a copyright issue) did not make the official video release. A new piece of music appears on the official release of this tour which was never heard at the concerts themselves!

So here you can see from the UK TV broadcast of the concert on Monday December 27th 1993, the opening and closing of the show as it actually happened, with that original circus music which audiences heard on each night of the tour.

Also below is a side-by-side comparison video giving an idea of how the final Warner Girlie Show release differed from the 1993 TV broadcast (using a segment from the final number in the show "Everybody").

1993: Cancelled Girlie Show TV Broadcast

It was July 19th 1993 (a full two months before her Girlie Show Tour even started) that Madonna formally agreed to allow HBO to broadcast one of the concerts on the tour! After months of speculation and rumours then, CNN reported that the final decision to broadcast Madonna's Girlie Show tour from Australia and not Mexico, was influenced by Madonna's personal liking for the event being billed as "Madonna Down Under"! (In fact when Warner Music Vision issued the concert on home video in 1994, they used this for the title of their product.)

The Girlie Show live from Australia followed on from live TV broadcasts of the Blond Ambition tour in 1990 and the Who's That Girl tour in 1987 and this time, as well as HBO TV broadcasts in North and South America, a world exclusive LIVE airing of the concert from Sydney was planned by German TV channel "Premiere".

Due to the time difference between Europe and Australia, the special broadcast of Madonna's concert at the Sydney Cricket Ground on the evening of Saturday November 20th 1993 was set to happen in Germany that morning starting at 10:25am!

Sadly when fans sat down to watch in Germany, they were greeted with a message that the TV event was not happening! This was due to the concert in Australia having been cancelled because of heavy rain - and while nothing was aired that day, the previous night's show from Friday November 19th (which had luckily been filmed as a test run) was hastily shown on Sunday November 21st in the evening and later used for the official home video release.

Watch now, the original German TV trailer for the live broadcast which never happened and then re-live what was shown and said the morning of the concert special.

Next, head over to The Beats Within blog for a great interview with the Cinematographer of the "Live Down Under" production Toby Philips for an insight into everything surrounding the ill fated Australian concert and the filming of the previous night's show which ended up being used.

1990: Blond Ambition Dortmund Germany

Another rare Blond Ambition TV news report now (could there ever be enough of them?!).

Here's some German TV coverage of the gig at Dortmund's Westfalenhalle on Tuesday July 17th 1990.

Fans were interviewed outside the venue and some great pro-shot footage of "Express Yourself" and "Where's The Party" was shown. This was one of the very few indoor arena European Blond Ambition shows.
